However, we know for the most part they need to be done on a regular basis for full benefit. From time-to-time we will offer black light search services. There are professional services around the Valley that can help. For some, going out at night to do a black light search would result in a sleepless night or one full of nightmares. Our goal at Seal Out Scorpions is not only to help keep them out, but also to help our Clients feel comfortable in their homes. However, many more of our Clients would never consider it, nor would we recommend it. This is a great scorpion control strategy. Many of our Clients conduct their own black light searches. At the very least, closed shoes should be worn and always avoid flip-flops, sandals or other opened toed shoes. However, that can be quite uncomfortable during an August night. Be very mindful of your surroundings and good preparation on the property, during the day can be beneficial in safety issues. Caution should also be used based on the terrain and obstacles on the property or in the area that you are searching. In dessert areas, snakes and wild animals can also be a threat. Since spiders and their webbing don’t fluoresce they cannot be easily seen. The webs can often be found around structures or between a house and a trailer that has been parked for some time, as an example. Use caution to not accidentally walk into their webbing. In the cities, Black Widow Spiders are very common. However, there can be a number of other creatures that can pose threats. In fact, any spaces between concrete are great places to look, including in the patio. Head around your fence line and pay extra close attention to any block bricks with broken mortar or spaces. Best Hiding Places: Scorpions LOVES our Arizona brick fencing and walls, so that might be a great place to start.Just don’t shine it in your eyes or anyone else’s eyes. Best Tools: Just about any UV light will work…and yes, you can buy a ‘specialized’ scorpion black light from Lowe’s or Home Depot and it should work just fine.Best Time: The best time of evening to go scorpion hunting is 2 hours after dark, or early morning just before the sun rises. Here’s how to go scorpion hunting in the dark: Well, we’ll never know for sure, but what we do know is that black lights do work to help you find scorpions. Have you ever heard the old wives tale that scorpions glow under a full moon? Well, now you know why…maybe. When flooded in UV, they are less active than when lights are dim. In a recent issue of the Journal of Arachnology, the Cal State team reported that the arachnids adjust their activity level depending on the amount of UV shining on them. They abhor the heat and evaporative effects of sunlight, and it turns out they specifically avoid UV light too. One scientist might say that it’s for mating purposes, while another might say it’s for attracting prey, another might say it’s a way to determine UV levels in the atmosphere. Here’s the thing, no one truly knows why scorpions glow under black light. So, how does this work? How do you find scorpions in the dark? And why do our Arizona scorpions seem to glow under black light? If you’ve lived in Arizona for any length of time, you’ve no doubt heard the term ‘black light scorpion hunting.’ Heck, they even sell so-called specialized scorpion black lights at your local hardware store.
